Holiday Spending - MoneyRates' Survey Shows Most Budget under $1,000

min read

A survey of more than 1,000 consumers indicates their holiday spending plans and how they expect to fund them. Men expect to spend less than women.

Foster City, CA -- November 14, 2019 -- Personal finance resource, MoneyRates.com, just published the results of a consumer survey on holiday spending. Surprisingly, more than one-quarter of respondents say they will not spend extra during the holiday season. Men were more likely to declare that over-spending was off limits this year:

Those planning no extra spending during holidays

  • Men: 30%
  • Women: 24%

The majority of respondents do expect to spend more in November and December than they do during other months. Consumers say their highest priority spending items are:

  • Gifts: 51%
  • Food and beverages: 19%
  • Travel: 14%
  • Charitable donations: 9%
  • Entertainment (parties): 7%

Survey results show significant differences between male and female responses. People with travel plans are more likely to have higher spending expectations than those who intend to stay at home.

"While we inquire about consumers' holiday spending plans and how they expect to cover those expenditures, we also offer advice on reining in temptations to overspend," explains Gina Pogol, the study's author. "Along with presenting our survey findings, we discuss ways to finance costs, if necessary."
