Chase Credit Cards

With a history spanning decades and multiple acquisitions, Chase has long been at the forefront of the credit card industry. Its array of personal cards is designed to match any consumer's needs, whether those needs demand cash back, low interest or points that offer rewards on travel and dining. Meanwhile, the business credit cards offered by Chase provide powerful tools that can help small businesses better manage credit.

The 2000 merger of Chase Manhattan and JP Morgan created the major financial services provider JPMorgan Chase & Co. The Chase brand name delineates the side of the business that handles credit card services in the U.S. and Canada, retail bank branches in the U.S. and its commercial banking services.

Growth through acquisitions

The Chase credit card division, headquartered in Wilmington, Del., owes its size to a number of key acquisitions over the years by Chase Manhattan and JPMorgan Chase.

But the history of Chase-branded credit cards extends to the 1950s. In 1958, Chase Manhattan Bank, which had been created three years earlier, unveiled a program called the Chase Manhattan Charge Plan.

In this program, customers were offered a single retail charge account, providing credit at a citywide network of stores. The bank was the initial provider to offer this kind of program in New York City, and among the nation's first to offer such a program.

Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. and Chemical Bank were founding members of the Eastern States Bankcard Association and thereby entered the credit card business in 1969. By 1981, Bank One, the company resulting from the merger of National Bank & Trust Co., became the nation's largest processor of Visa transactions.

Chase Manhattan eventually acquired Manufacturers Hanover and Chemical Bank. JPMorgan Chase acquired Bank One. So the 2000 merger brought a number of former giants together under one entity.

Tailored services

As one of the world's largest credit card providers, Chase is in the forefront of offering the tailored card services that today's consumers desire. Some of its most popular cards provide competitive travel rewards or cash back earnings, but Chase also offers 0 percent APR credit cards, balance transfer credit cards, no annual fee credit cards, credit cards with no foreign transaction fee, and a wide variety of business credit cards.

Though it traces its history through many smaller companies, today's Chase is a monolithic figure in the credit card industry. And given the size and scope of its credit card offerings, that seems unlikely to change anytime soon.
